Do you know the difference between Grounding and Earthing ?

 

On several occasions I have attended presentations on electricity, quite often I have seen the use of the terms grounding and earthing or earthing and grounding which I feel is not quite right. 

According to the term in Indonesian, grounding is probably more about grounding and earthing is earthing. (Please correct if it's wrong, because I'm not a linguist… ed). But to avoid mistakes in the use of terms, I prefer to use the terms Grounding and Earthing, not arrogant British, but rather to clarify the difference.

In this post, I will discuss the differences between Grounding and Earthing. Not Earth with Earthing, to avoid confusion.

Grounding and Earthing

The main difference that distinguishes between grounding and earthing is that, in grounding, the part that conducts current in an equipment, is connected to the ground while earthing is the part that does not conduct current in an equipment that is connected to the ground.

Grounding :

As explained above, in grounding, the part that delivers current is connected to the ground. This serves as a reverse pathway from the electrical system to the equipment and prevents the equipment from being damaged. When a disturbance occurs, the three-phase electric current in an equipment will become unbalanced.

Grounding will drain the fault current to the ground so that the system becomes balanced again. Some of the other advantages of grounding are, eliminating voltage spikes and also bypassing the overvoltage (over voltage) to the ground. So grouding is more about providing tool safety and security and increasing equipment reliability.

Earthing :

As has also been explained earlier, earthing functions to connect parts that do not conduct current in a grounding device. When a disturbance occurs, the voltage on the part that is not electrified in a piece of equipment, especially the body of the equipment will increase, so that it can endanger living things around it who touch the body of the equipment.

Earthing also protects equipment or installations from lightning strikes by providing a pathway for the discharge of electrical energy due to the ground strike.
